Feeling a little Squirrely?

The Gray Squirrels at Lake Parker are always on the lookout for a handout. They appear identical to their Pennsylvania brethren with the exception that they are only about one-half the size

Is it stunted growth or their environment and issues there? I thought all gray squirrels are the same general size and color but may be wrong.

I do know that genetics and genes that mutate result in black gray squirrels which are almost more dramatic than the occasional albino ones. This one is a good looking squirrel.

This as a cheeky look about it.. theone that I have befriended this winter is very tame around me now. It sits on my chair back at times. Eats from my hand, and will even knock on the windows to be let in.

ha! what have I started..

Abe,
The size may be an example of Bergmann's Rule which broadly states that within a species, body mass increases with both latitude and colder climates.

One explanation is that the larger size animal has less surface area relative to its volume which in turn slows heat loss.

You got to come back and take a look at me in my new blond wig.

Salty: Thanks for the visit. I enjoyed strolling through your sight. I love the squirrel picture. It does remind me of Abe's work. I'm getting excited about the fishing but the water is way too hard and way too cold.
