This photo is the best of the series I obtained from an encounter with a Ruffed Grouse, my first encounter with camera in hand!
The shy elusive Ruffed Grouse is difficult at best to photograph. With the depressed populations brought on by over-browsing of the underbrush by deer; photographing Ruffed Grouse has became next to impossible.
This grouse was alarmed upon discovering my presence but its curiosity allowed me to get a few frames off before it rapidly departed.

Gosh. This is just stunning. I can't remember the last time I saw a Grouse like this but it was over 60 years ago and I probably pulled the trigger and shot him. I suspect we ate him as I wouldn't kill something for sport.
I don't think I ever saw a Pheasant except running around a fence row. I seldom see one captured by a camera.
Great job Salty and a wonderful experience these days just to see one. I hunted the mountains in Franklin County for 20 years in the 70's and 80's seeing very few.
Thats a real bragging shot.
Wow! What a beautiful bird! I don't believe I have ever seen one of these!!
I think this would make a BEAUTIFUL notecard!!!
Catching up..beautiful photos. No wonder people can't see the grouse. It blends right in doesn't it? --Michelle--
Salty: Love the shot and it is a winner. I remember that rapid depart with the wings ablaze. This will probably make next years magazine.
Great shot!
I played too :)
Stunning photo
Any encounter would be fine by me. Wonderful. Your header image is incredible.
Nothing left to say but hats off!

Excellent shot Salty. I've never seen one in real life. that's what I like about blogging. I learn an see so many interesting things.
Congratulations: great shot. And beautiful bird. Are efforts underway to help restore its habitat?

I've never seen a grouse ruffled or otherwise. Good find.
You're right, I really had to run to keep up with that snail :)
Beautiful photo. I don't think I've ever seen one up close and your photo is probably the closest I will come to seeing one. Wonderful job on this one. It looks like a postcard.
A great photo! The way he's posed in those minds makes me think this would make a nice xmas card!
