Great Blue Heron Scenic

A Great Blue Heron standing on the remains of an old beaver house watches the water intently

Usually when shooting wildlife I find myself trying to get the best close-ups possible but sometimes I miss the best that the situation has to offer by excluding too much of the surrounding environment.

I was intrigued by the possibilities this encounter with the heron in the shadows and the sunlit lake to the right offered. I bracketed the exposure in my attempt to achieve a satisfactory balance between sun and shadow.

This photo looks like something in a wild life book or in a story. I too like to get a "whole picture" sometimes - just to get the feel of what ever you are shooting...debbie

Nice capture Salty, I have a couple of shots with my 300mm lens - but still way to far away.

That's a beautiful place, Salty!
Herons are such elegant birds.

Great shot. I agree that the background really adds to the photo and the entire scene instead of just the bird.

Nice shot! I saw a Blue Heron today too. We took a run over to Bowdoin NWR, and that was the first bird we saw - alas, he spotted us first and took off, so no photo. But at least we got to see one!

Good point, Salty! We often sacrifice the beauty of the scene as we zoom in too far or crop it to death just to get close - when this is the beauty that drew us in -- in the first place. We should all strive to have more 'scenes from nature' in our posts. Nicely done!

Salty: They seem to stay stoic like that for a long time and then strike with fury. Neat photo. Love you Eagle header.
