I noticed this Red-bellied Woodpecker’s head is much sleeker than what I am accustomed to seeing. Thinking back, I realized that most of my encounters with these birds have been in the winter.
Another reason it's head might look like it dose is at this time of year it will be popping its head in and out of a nest hole all day... maybe dirt and grime flattens the feathers down a touch.
What ever the reason it's a great 'Country Capture'
Salty: I love to see woodpeckers and hear them working a tree. I had a big black and white one fly in front of the car yesterday when returning from PA. I didn't know if I could chase it so I drove on.
BTW: The Crappies have moved in and today I caught over 50. They were in the 8" to 10" range. Usually the big one follow a week or two later. Everything is behind this year.
I think Tom's answer makes a lot of sense. In and out of the tree holes could make one pretty gritty. Its an amazingly long pointy beak. Nice capture Salty.

He's a weird looking one, Salty. Could he be a young one...his head feathers seem a bit dissheveled....
ReplyDeleteHe does look a little long in the tooth. I suspect it is like squirrels. Some of short ears and some have long ears.
ReplyDeleteGood image Dad.
ReplyDeleteGreat colours and markings Salty.beautfully captured.

What a pretty composition, Salty. I like the green and blue in the background of this pretty bird.
ReplyDeleteHope all is well in your neck of the woods. Greet Chad for me...he must be happily busy these days! :-)
