Ruffed Grouse: My First Captures

This photo is the best of the series I obtained from an encounter with a Ruffed Grouse, my first encounter with camera in hand!

The shy elusive Ruffed Grouse is difficult at best to photograph. With the depressed populations brought on by over-browsing of the underbrush by deer; photographing Ruffed Grouse has became next to impossible.

This grouse was alarmed upon discovering my presence but its curiosity allowed me to get a few frames off before it rapidly departed.

  1. Gosh. This is just stunning. I can't remember the last time I saw a Grouse like this but it was over 60 years ago and I probably pulled the trigger and shot him. I suspect we ate him as I wouldn't kill something for sport.

I don't think I ever saw a Pheasant except running around a fence row. I seldom see one captured by a camera.

  2. Great job Salty and a wonderful experience these days just to see one. I hunted the mountains in Franklin County for 20 years in the 70's and 80's seeing very few.

    Thats a real bragging shot.
