Buck Break: Woodpecker

We interrupt this Buck Show to bring you a Woodpecker

When photographing nature sometimes a species other than our target species presents a photographic opportunity. Such was the case with this woodpecker.

I was sitting quietly in a small pop-up blind in our Pennsylvania woodland when this bird landed close by. I believe this to be an immature female Yellow-bellied Sapsucker but I am not 100% positive of the identification.

  1. Great shot! And I believe you to be right on the ID. I tried so hard to get a shot of this woodpecker this past summer and they moved too fast.

  2. I saw a pileated woodpecker, actually two of them, a week ago. A week before that I heard one but did not see it. Talk about impressive birds. They were tearing off the bark from a pine tree. Impressive.

  3. What a lovely shot of it Coy. I know I get taken away from my main photographic objective many, many times as there is too much to distract me sometimes. LOL!!

  4. Salty: What a neat shot of the woodpecker.
I had a similar experience where I was trying to shoot a pond reflection and squirrels just came all around and then right up to me. You just take advantage of the opertunity.

  7. I believe You are correct on your I.D. of the Woodpecker too. Nice capture. It's fun when they come to you instead of having to chase them.
