Little Blue Heron

No trip to Florida would be complete without spending time viewing its incredible birdlife. With the main focus of my recent trip being the wedding of our son Chad, I was unsure of how much time I could devote to wildlife photography. Upon our arrival, I soon ascertained that he and Sandy were quite busy wrapping up last minute details allowing me considerable time to pursue wildlife photography.

I decided to concentrate on the Florida prairie country south of Kissimmee. Internet research had revealed Joe Overstreet Road to be an excellent destination and I was not to be disappointed. This area proved to be an excellent place to locate many of the long legged wading birds along with Sandhill Cranes, the rare and endangered Whooping Cranes, Bald Eagles, and many more species.

This photograph is of a Little Blue Heron flying over Lake Kissimmee, photo taken from the air-boat launching area at Joe Overstreet.

  2. Beautiful Capture. I havn't had the opportunity to see this bird yet. We spend most of our time on the West Coast, but I had a nice vacation to Florida once too. I would be fun to experience Florida throught the Lens of Birding.

  7. Stunning capture of the bird in flight. The blues and greys make the composition perfect.

  8. That's neat you were able to find a bit of time to take some great pictures. LOL I don't think my new little digital camera would come even close to taking shot like this. Great pictures of the wedding.

  13. Great shot. I saw some Blue Heron at th lake today. It was eagle viewing week end at bagnel dam. I saw 1 eagle but 300mm was not a big enough lens to get a great photo.

  16. Love that capture Salty, also great shot of your sons wedding to Sandy, I think this kind of shot is is also great, when Julie and I photograph a wedding (we have shot 4 up to now) I do the formal ones and Julie does shots from the side and catching the crowd, and the reports we have got back is that they all love this idea.

Thanks for the wonderful comment on Gull n Boat.

  18. Coy sounds like it has been an awesome week. Congrats on the wedding, looks like the weather cooperated. Look forward to seeing your other Overstreet shots. I visited briefly last month, especially looking for the Whoopers, but did not have the success it sounds like you had. Blue Skies.
