I captured this image at Lake Marion during my December ’08 visit to Florida. Since I live inland and seldom see gulls I haven’t made an effort to identify this bird. Hopefully someone can help with the ID.
Of the gull flight shots I captured during my trip this image is my favorite.

I don't know what kind of gull it is but that is a beautiful photo. I love how smooth it looks in flight. I also really like how you were able to capture its wings at that angle in the photo.
ReplyDeleteI love the way you captured the arch and edge of the gull's wings. Living on the coast most of my life mad gulls a daily occurance. I was never very interested in them because they were noisy, messy and could be agressive. Of course as I got into photography suddenly they were much more interesting. I really don't know the name of this one but your capture is perfect.
ReplyDeleteSalty: Thank for visiting my blog. I am new to blogging and still finding my way around. Inmature gulls are hard to ID but I am sure that Ken Conger will be able to help you. I see you use Canon equipment, the 100-400 is my most versatile lens and great for flying birds.

Nice flight capture. The bill tells all on this one, it is a Ring-billed Gull. Also on most flying gulls the wing pattern is very helpful.
ReplyDeleteNice shot Coy but I do love the previous one of the grass. It is very well captured.
ReplyDeleteIt is an adult ring-billed gull, in winter plumage. Looking at the maps, this is a migratory bird for you folks in PA.
ReplyDeleteCoy, I pulled out my birdiing books, looked it up and was about to tell you it was a ring billed gull when I see you have already been told numerous times. Just likeme a day late and a dollar short. Great job panning with him.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great comments on my Florida birds, I just wish I would have had more than one day to shoot. Next trip I will take the grief from my family and plan at least three days to shoot.
Neat. I like the flight.

Hello Coy, excellent blog with very nice images. Congratulations from the other side of the Atlantic sea!
ReplyDeleteBirds flying are never easy for me to capture, great job with this shot!
ReplyDeleteNo idea about the id though:S
I agree with the others, it is a Ring Billed Gull. Made me feel good to see others say it, because I made that decision without having to look at the book. I keep trying.

This is a great "in-flight" photo. I'm always striving for that perfect in flight shot. It's not always so easy. I think I need a faster lens. With the economy the way it is, that lens will just have to wait.
