Long Beards: Pennsylvania Wild Turkeys

This morning dawned gray with low clouds darkening the morning sky. The air, considerably warmer than in previous days, had a sweet odor that is only present during a mid winter thaw.

An hour after daybreak the sound of gobbling echoed from a nearby hill and progressively became nearer. Finally, the first gobbler stepped into view. Soon the flock was moving past close by as the sun broke through the dissipating clouds. In a few moments the clouds again covered the sun and the gobblers had moved beyond range.

For a moment what had at first appeared to be a poor photographic morning changed remarkably for the better. A moment is all it takes to capture a memorable image. The wildlife photographer spends many hours outdoors in all kinds of weather conditions waiting for that moment, the moment that makes all of the hours worthwhile

  1. Great shot. Hubby and I saw some wild turkys running around a housing addition where we were working a couple years ago. LOL took us forever to figure out what they were. Don't see many wild turkys running around the city.

  2. Love the Turkeys. I knew a hunter many years ago and I asked him how he sat in a tree all those many hours. His answer shocked me. He took composition books with him and wrote. What about, I asked and he said, whatever I want.

How do you pass those hours while waiting for those wonderful shots.

  5. This is a beautiful, descriptive piece Coy. Seems like spring might be on the way. Here, I can feel the chilliness creeping in when I go outside to have my early morning coffee. I think we are going to have a cold one this year.

  10. Won't be as easy to get close to come hunting season. I went hunting (with ex) once. Too time consuming for me. Now I probably could handle it, as long as I had my camera in hand.
