SkyWatch: Swooping Osprey

This is what it may look like to a fish when, too late, it heads for cover alarmed by the large bird dropping from the sky at an incredible rate of speed. A moment later the Osprey’s talons would descend, grasping the fish with its razor sharp claws as they pierce through the fish’s body in a grip of death.

A clear blue sky is the easiest background for capturing flight shots. With nothing to distract the cameras auto focus the camera will quickly focus on the bird and the bright sunlight allows for action freezing shutter speeds.

  11. Salty, this is a great shot. I enlarged to get a better view of the osprey's keen yellow eye. Awesome capture! And thanks for the photography tip, too.

  12. Nifty photo! How weird, a speckled head! It does have yellow beady eyes! I have NOT been successful in shooting birds in flight or any other place. I have a few, not one of them are "GOOD". Don't know what I doing wrong. I have a 300 lens but it doesn't seem to help...debbie

  17. Great shot! And the blue skies recently are superb for bird watching. I saw several hawks yesterday, but they were too high to get clear images.
