Red-winged Blackbird: Blackwater NWR

Red-winged Blackbirds normally arrive in my area about the third week of February.  I always look forward to their arrival as an early harbinger of spring.  However apparently some winter on Maryland's Eastern Shore as they have been present on both of our recent visits to Blackwater NWR.  Needless to say it was a pleasure to hear the song I associate with spring on a mid winter day.

  1. they've been swamping my feeders here for a month or two, but they've started singing here the past couple of weeks, as well. i'm almost ready to send 'em north!

  4. Wonderful shot, Coy! We haven't had any RWB this winter.

  5. A friend of mine was asking today if anyone had seen them around yet (Upstate NY), no one had...but she'd heard that they were back early...due to our mild temps and total lack of snow. If you have them in PA, I guess we can expect to see them in our neck o' the woods soon enough!

  6. Great shot of a beautiful bird. We didn't go on many road trips the last time home so we didn't see these. We usually see plenty of them out in the country.

  7. Wonderful capture. I haven't seen any of those in our parts, but we have black crows with green eyes that I wish would head north.
