Camera Critters: Red-bellied Woodpecker

The pretty little Red-bellied Woodpeckers are popular winter feeder birds. Not only are they attracted by suet they will also frequent common birdseed mixes.

This Red-bellied has been visiting our deck feeder all winter eating the sunflower seed we feed. It has become acclimated to our presence allowing me to shoot through the window from only a 3-4 foot distance.

  6. Coy, now you made me feel bad, I just got back from spending the day out shooting birds and didn't see any close enough for a shot like this. All were shot with the big lens.

Downloading cards now, maybe I got some sharp ones.

    Great shot.

  10. Lovely, close shot - although I've had plenty of these birds at my own feeders over the years, i don't think I've seen one's head close up before.

  11. This is a fabulous shot! My feeders are too far from my windows for this kind of shot...so I'm envious. ;-)

  14. Not too often you get to see a bird close enough to tell that it needs to wipe the crumbs off its beak :)
