Wood Ducks: Family Reunion

While walking into the wetland last evening I disturbed a Woodduck hen and her brood. The hen played the cripple as her ducklings scurried out of sight, all going in different directions. Once she was out of sight I heard her flush.

Some time after I concealing myself the hen did a flyby and on the second pass she landed and began regrouping her little family.

  1. Nice shot. I like the muted greens in the foreground, presumably some leaves or grass you were peering through. What do you mean you hear her "flush?"

  6. 2sweetnsaxy,
Flush is used to describe a frightened bird taking to the air rapidly. In the case of most waterfowl flushing is noisy with the beating of wings and splashing water.

  12. There must be a secret for finding and photographing ducks other than mallards. I must not be looking in areas that are secluded enough. I LOVE this shot.
