Change is in the Air

Change is slowly creeping across the northeastern landscape.  The lush green leaves of early summer are now insect damaged, worn and torn, and some are beginning to show a spot of color foretelling the coming change of the season.

For those pursuing whitetails with the camera, the time for photographing bucks in velvet is drawing to a close.  The antlers are nearly fully developed and withing the next three weeks most bucks will have shed.

And the Pa elk rut is just around the corner.  Typically the last two weeks of September will see the most intense rutting activity.  If you are planning a trip to Pennsylvania's elk country to see and hear the thrilling action it's time to make your overnight reservations if you haven't already done so.  And if you love viewing wildlife and have never experienced the elk rut make plans now to visit Pennsylvania's elk country and observe the most impressive wildlife show the Keystone State has to offer!

New Leaves in Mid Winter

Imagine my surprise at finding new leaves in the middle of our Pennsylvania winter. Nestled in a well sheltered hollow with a good southern exposure, I found these tiny leaves growing on a Multiflora Rose.

Multiflora Rose, once recommended for planting as a living cattle fence and also used as crash barriers in the medians of divided highways, is now considered a noxious invasive alien plant species.

Although the Multiflora Rose has fallen from favor, I enjoyed finding this token of the season of new life just around the corner.

Vivid Colors of Evening

A partly cloudy evening provided me with this warm spotlight effect. My interest was drawn by the contrast between sun & shadows with remnants of an old shed providing the left frame.

A Turkey Vulture glides gracefully in the strong March winds.

I always await the return of the vultures. Their graceful flight is one of the first signs the long winter is coming to an end.

The Changing Season

Twelve days ago our Cannas were blooming beautifully. I captured this bloom the evening before we expected our first killing frost.


Today I again photographed the Cannas. Soon I will be digging the canna bulbs for winter storage. The original bulbs were given to us by my mother before she passed away. This makes them very special to my wife and I and we look forward to seeing them grow each year.

Autumn Leaves

With only a few days left before they too must join the others on the

forest floor, these leaves show off their colors in the morning light.

Fallen

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven
A time to be born and a time to die.

The season is passed for the log and the leaves; in splendor they gather

on the forest floor to return to the earth from where they came.

Autumn Splendor

As we approach the peak colors of autumn one must take time away from busy schedules to absorb the awesome beauty.

Soon those "must do" items on our daily schedule will be as unimportant and forgotten as this old hay rake sitting abandoned by the edge of the field.

Country Roads

I love the beautiful scenes afforded us by our many country roads. As we move into autumn they become more beautiful with each passing day. I full well know that soon the dull drab grays of winter will be upon us but now is the time to bask in the glory of autumn. As with all things in life........

Summer’s End

Another season has passed. Summer’s hot, hazy, lazy days are over.
Everything has its season and just as surely as the summer has passed,

so has the useful life of this old machine.
