SkyWatch Friday: The Last Light of Day

The most brilliant colors of sunset occur some time after the sun has dropped below the horizon.

The image on my previous post was taken as the sun was beginning to touch the mountains to my west. This image was captured sixteen minutes later.

As you will notice the contrast and intensity of color has dramatically increased.

For a full explanation of this phenomenon and great information on how best to capitalize upon it visit Jim Moore at Transient Light Photography.

I spend a lot of time each day before dawn and after sunset just looking at things I saw during the day and I often take more photos at these hours than at any other time.

I think this is going to be the best Sky Watch Friday yet. The things I have seen are very encouraging and the photography is spot on.

I really admire your photography skills and your critical eye for composition, lighting and texture.

Yes, the best colors often happen after the sun goes down. Very nice picture, Salty!

Salty: I most certainly agree, we can't see the sun anymore but the clouds certainly get the rays and they are beautiful.

Incredibly beautiful, Salty. Many times I've looked back out my window after the sun has set and been amazed and the brilliance it's left behind. This is no exception.

Please greet Mrs. Salty for me.

Truly breathtaking colors and I like how mellow and peaceful the scene looks in the previous post.

Beautiful colours. If I can I like to take a series of pictures at dawn or sunset as the light keeps changing, it just gets better and better.

Beautiful!

I enjoyed reading your post. I too found you have to keep watching. I took mine this week over 35 minutes. It's amazing if you have patience!

Very beautiful sunset! You have an amazing family! Visited your brothers site yesterday, and your sons just now! And your son and I are "almost" neighbors - I live 45 mins up north!
Happy 4th!
