Wary Woodies

While clicking around on the blogs of other photographers I occasionally find that someone has posted some absolutely stunning close-up images of Wood Ducks. I admit that each time I am just a little bit envious of their images as the Wood Ducks that live in my area are the wariest species of wild duck that I commonly encounter.

During my latest visit to the lake, after searching the entire shoreline along one side, I finally encountered two pair of woodies in the marsh at the headwaters. Focusing on one pair I was able to capture a decent shot as they swam through the reeds but upon trying to approach just a little closer caused them to burst into flight at a moment when I was unable to bring the camera into action.

After making a U turn the Wood Duck pair passed by high overhead, giving me an opportunity for a distant pass shot.

I have similar experiences. I know where we have some and no matter how careful I am they spook

Hi Coy,
I love these two pictures. Close-up pictures are nice but I tend to prefer the one showing the species in the environment. I had started by close-up shots but turn into more environmental approach now... I do love a lot your first picture!

Wonderful photography. I especially enjoyed those grebe shots as I find them almost as hard to get close to as the woodies.

Yep, those little suckers are sooo frustrating! I get lucky here and there, but none will ever top my Chicago trip. I've spent years perfecting my stealthy attack, but they have that incredible way of seeing the slightest movements! Good luck in your quest Coy, I hate to say it but we all need a little luck with these guys!

The shots you got are better than I can ever hope for. Perhaps next time you will encounter a less timid and more photogenic pair??
