Feeder Fussy: White-breasted Nuthatch

White-breasted Nuthatches can be very defensive of their food source.

This little fellow took exception to a tufted titmouse who repeatedly tried to land on the natural feeder directly below the it's perch.

I enjoyed watching how the nuthatch flared it's wings, tripling its profile, while swiveled to face the intruder.

The belligerent little nuthatch was successful, for after just a few rebuffs, the titmouse gave up retreating to the woodland.

I had all kinds of birds in my small city lot back yard the other day. Including what I think was one of these, a cardinal, and at least fifteen robins, among others. I thought the little black cap was adorable.

Nice series of Nuthatch behavior. I think being territorial is the name of the game...you should see the Hummingbirds guarding a feeder in my backyard! Lots of energy and defiance in a tiny little body, not to mention the aerobatics!

I realize the Nuthatch was angry, but I wonder if he realizes how beautiful his display was. ;-)
